{"id":130,"date":"2004-01-21T08:23:00","date_gmt":"2004-01-21T08:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jclark.org\/weblog\/WebDev\/elegance.html"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"elegance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jclark.org\/weblog\/2004\/01\/21\/elegance\/","title":{"rendered":"Understated Elegance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/jclark.org\/weblog\/WebDev\/easyrgb.html\">alluded to<\/a>, I&#8217;d like to revamp my site layout a bit, but I&#8217;m <a href=\"http:\/\/jclark.org\/weblog\/WebDev\/semquiz.html\">not a designer<\/a>.  Changing the look would also give me another reason to make time to experiment with <a href=\"http:\/\/fletcher.freeshell.org\/\">Fletcher&#8217;s<\/a> new <a href=\"http:\/\/fletcher.freeshell.org\/computers\/web\/blosxom\/blosxcss\/blosxcss.html\">blosxcss project<\/a> for reusable Blosxom site layouts.<\/p>\n<p>I am on this topic because today I ran across a site that made an immediate visual impact, one of understated elegance.  That site is dugh&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sp.ookee.com\/\">sp.ookee.com<\/a>, a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ookee.com\">ookee.com network<\/a>.  Sp.ookee features a fantasticly minimalist layout, but doesn&#8217;t look plain or unstyled.  Plenty of negative space.  Font sizes all seem appropriate to the task.  No demarcation between content and sidebar, as none seems needed.  The site tree at the top of the page is compact and eminantly useful.<\/p>\n<p>I think my favorite part of the layout is the date headers.  The are reverse-indented, which is to say, everything else on the page is indented.  They use dots instead of slashes in the dates, which combined with the large-font-sized, bolded Georgia (numbers look fantastic in Georgia), seems very sophisticated.  Best of all, the letter-spacing is expanded quite a bit.  It doesn&#8217;t scream &#8220;elegance&#8221;&#8230; because it doesn&#8217;t need to scream.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s even using my <a href=\"http:\/\/jclark.org\/weblog\/WebDev\/Blosxom\/plugins\/moreentries\">moreentries plugin<\/a>.
